Blessed Thomas Holford Catholic College Gets ‘Good’ Ofsted Rating
Blessed Thomas Holford Catholic College in Altrincham has improved its Ofsted rating to ‘Good’ in 2025. Just two years ago, in January 2023, the school was told it “Requires Improvement”. This new result shows that the school has worked hard to get better.
The school has 1,555 students and is on Urban Road. Before 2023, it had been rated ‘Outstanding’ since 2013. Now, inspectors say the school is back on track.
What Ofsted Said
Inspectors visited in March 2025 and said the school has a “calm yet joyful” feel. They were happy with how students learn and behave.
“Pupils, including those who are disadvantaged, achieve highly,” the report said.
The school also teaches students about different cultures and religions. This helps students understand and respect people who are different from them.
Good Learning and Reading Habits
Ofsted liked how the school has clear rules that help students focus and behave well.
“There is rarely any disruption to learning,” inspectors said.
They were also happy to see that students enjoy reading and do it often.
Strong Leadership and Teamwork
Headteacher Clare Hogg, who became the leader after John Cornally MBE, said:
“We are so happy Ofsted has seen the hard work of our school family.”
She said the school helps each child become the best they can be.
Canon Pat Munroe said the school is welcoming to everyone, including those with disabilities, and that it shows kindness and respect to all.
Better Leadership, Better School
Ofsted said new leaders and a stronger governing body helped make big improvements:
“A strengthened governing body, along with changes in leadership, have brought about positive change,” they wrote.
Older students in the sixth form were called “mature role models” for younger students.
What Still Needs Work
Ofsted said there are still a few things to work on. Teachers need to get better at checking what students understand and changing lessons to help all learners.
The school’s values — “be kind, work hard, develop my whole self” — were praised by Ofsted. They said these are not just words, but something everyone at the school truly follows.
