Gallagher’s Tavern on the Green Opens with Irish Dancing and Live Music in Altrincham

A new chapter has begun for the former Tavern on the Green in Altrincham, now known as Gallagher’s Tavern on the Green. The pub, located on Stamford New Road, has been taken over by the family-run business of Jacqui and Callum Gallagher. The mother and son duo has worked hard to transform the space in just nine days, bringing fresh energy and new plans to the venue.

One of the first big changes is a striking mural of Guinness, created by local artist Richard Preston, which now takes pride of place in the pub. While the mural is already finished, Jacqui and Callum have more renovations planned over the next few weeks to continue improving the space.

For Callum, 29, this pub represents an exciting opportunity to mix his family’s long history in the pub industry with his own passion for Irish dancing. “I started dancing when I was about six or seven,” Callum explained. “I competed up until I was around 14. I ranked 10th in the world championships when I was 13 and was European champion three times. I also won the Northwest championship about seven times.”

Callum plans to incorporate Irish dancing into the pub’s entertainment lineup, bringing his skills and passion to the venue. He is part of Sonas, an established Irish dancing group that means “happiness” in Gaelic. “We’ll be performing here,” Callum said. “I’ll get some time to put my shoes on!”

Jacqui, who has 40 years of experience working in pubs across the North West, has also helped Callum and the family business. She has worked in around eight or nine different pubs throughout her career. Callum joked, “My mum brought me up in pubs. I’ve spent more time in pubs than in houses!”

Gallagher’s Tavern on the Green follows the success of the Gallaghers’ first pub, the Horseshoe in Levenshulme. This pub has grown and developed, especially after being revamped with a focus on the Irish community. “We looked at the traditional Irish music scene and brought everything together,” said Callum, who will be overseeing the general management of Gallagher’s Tavern on the Green while his mother will manage operations behind the scenes.

Live music will play a big part in the entertainment at Gallagher’s. Callum shared that fiddle player Colleen Langan will be performing regularly. “We’re bringing in live music to give people a good time,” he said.

The pub’s kitchen is currently being set up, but once it is ready, they plan to offer tasty food. One of their specialties will be steak and Guinness pies, and they’re also thinking of serving “steak and Murphy’s pies” as a nod to their family’s connection with Murphy’s stout.

In keeping with the pub’s heritage, they decided to keep part of the original name, calling it “Gallagher’s Tavern on the Green.” The Gallagher family has Irish roots, with their name originally coming from Galway. Although Callum’s family comes from Wexford and Leitrim, they are proud of their Irish heritage and want to share it with the local community through their new pub.

To celebrate their reopening, Gallagher’s Tavern on the Green will hold a Grand Opening Party on Saturday evening. DJ Cagney will be playing music from 7:30pm to help kick off the new chapter for the pub.

With a mix of Irish charm, lively entertainment, and delicious food, Gallagher’s Tavern on the Green is set to be a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. Jacqui and Callum have big plans for the future and are excited to welcome everyone to their new venture.
